The Discovery: Finding the Cause

One night in 2000, because I was grinding my teeth so severely every night, I actually forced a tooth out of place. The tooth just to the left of my two front teeth shifted forward about 2 millimeters.

This event disturbed me so much that I talked about it with a friend that was working with me during a break. To my astonishment, her reply got right to the point. She asked, "Do you have a filling in that tooth?" I felt the back of the tooth with my tongue for a moment, and then replied, "Actually, yes."

She then went on to tell me that she had fibromyalgia for 5 years and went from doctor to doctor and was prescribed drug after drug but she continued getting worse. She became bed-ridden and could not work, at which point she decided to do some of her own research on the internet.

She came across some information that said there was mercury in "silver" dental fillings -- which she had -- and that mercury vapor off-gasses from these fillings 24/7. She read that mercury causes symptoms that matched many of the symptoms she was experiencing.

With this new information, she decided to have her "silver" fillings removed. She could not afford to have them all removed so she arranged to have a few removed.

Immediately after this removal, she began to feel considerably better. In fact, she was able to get out of bed and go back to work for the first time in years. Then she continued to have them removed as she could afford it and she continued to get better. She reached a point where she no longer considered herself to have fibromyalgia.

So, getting back to my displaced tooth, she told me that it shifted because my body was rejecting the mercury in the filling.

Epiphany

I remember this statement and this moment vividly. My mind began racing wondering if this really could cause a tooth to move out of place, or at least play some role in it. I had remembered hearing that "silver" dental fillings contain mercury in the past, but it never occurred to me that this could affect me or had anything to do with my countless problems.

That night I began doing the same thing she had done. I searched the internet for information about diseases and conditions related to mercury poisoning. I was in for quite a surprise when I found an article by a woman who had many of the same symptoms that I was having. She had her silver fillings removed, went on a mercury detox program, and all her ailments went away -- all of them -- and these were ailments that doctors had worked on for years with no success.

It's All In Your Head

While on the internet, I came across a dentist named Dr. Hal Huggins who was one of the leaders working to get silver fillings outlawed in the U.S., just as they already had been outlawed in some European and South American countries.

His website had a lot of information about amalgam fillings. It also said that Dr. Huggins' office had a list of dentists who were specially trained to remove mercury-based fillings safely.

So, the next day, I called his office.

His office told me that I should read his book before having my fillings removed so that I understood what I was getting into. After that, they would refer me to a local dentist who was specially trained in safe mercury removal.

Dr. Huggins book is called:

"It's All In Your Head: The Link Between Mercury Amalgams and Illness".

I located the book in a bookstore that evening and read it cover-to-cover over the next 2 days, and was very glad I did. There was indeed a lot of information to consider before making the decision to have my fillings removed.

Dr. Huggins had a lot to say about the potential disease-causing effects of mercury when it off-gasses from silver fillings. I also found many warnings that silver fillings can make you sick if they are removed improperly. Nevertheless, based on all of the evidence I found that mercury fillings do indeed make people sick, I became hopeful that having them removed would help me.

I contacted Dr. Huggins' office and got a referral for a local dentist and had all of my "silver" fillings removed just a couple of weeks later. Laura had hers removed on the same day.

Then, everything changed.
