Maximum Contaminant Levels: Fluoride

This page contains maximum contaminant levels for fluoride.

Drinking Water

Summary: Water is not safe to drink if fluoride exceeds 400 µg/L (micrograms per cubic liter).

EPA: 400 µg/L MCL before 4/1986, 200 µg/L SMCL after 4/1986 - U.S. EPA2
The U.S. EPA halved the acceptable fluoride levels from 400 µg/L to 200 µg/L in April, 1986, however, the EPA also moved fluoride from MCL status to SCML status indicating that they suddenly didn't consider it a health threat.2 Was this change a response to the Fluoridation Awareness Movement that was gaining ground about that time?

California: 200 µg/L MCL - The California Department of Public Health.2

Colorado: 400 µg/L MCL - Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment1
