Observers have found 308 dead whales in the waters around Peninsula Valdes along Argentina's Patagonian Coast since 2005. Almost 90 percent of those deaths represent whale calves less than 3 months old, and the calf deaths make up almost a third of all right whale calf sightings in the last five years. "This is the single largest die-off event in terms of numbers and in relation to population size and geographic range," said Marcela Uhart, a medical veterinarian with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). She represents an associate director in Latin America for the WCS Global Health Program. Researchers examined records for 17 snake populations covering eight species over the last few decades, and found most had declined markedly. For reasons that are not entirely clear, some populations shrank in number abruptly around 1998. Researchers in New York are breeding colonies of ladybugs from those found by scientists in Oregon and Colorado during a year-long search. Last year, entomologist John Losey from Cornell University first introduced the Lost Ladybug Project in an attempt to find out why the once-common native ladybug species had almost completely disappeared across the nation. The project, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, rounds up citizen scientists, or individual volunteers who may have no scientific training, to search for ladybugs and relay photos of them to Losey and his team. Researchers are particularly interested in the nine-spotted, two-spotted and transverse ladybugs. They are three native species whose populations have drastically dropped over the past ten years, likely due to the introduction of foreign species to control crop pests. The ailment—named for the white circles of fungus found around the noses of affected bats—was first noticed last January in four caves west of Albany, New York. It has now spread to eight bat-hibernation sites in the state and to another site in Vermont. Alan Hicks, a bat specialist with New York's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), called the quick-spreading disorder the "gravest threat" to bats he had ever seen. Infections, lack of food, pesticides and breeding - none catastrophic on their own - are having a synergistic effect, pushing bee survival to a lethal tipping point. A somewhat anti-climactic conclusion it may be, but appreciating this complexity - and realising there will be no magic bullet - may be the key to saving the insects. Just want to share this … last week my daughter and I seen a crop duster spraying the woods ..yes the woods not a field .. today we went for a drive back in the woods and seen 3 bucks laying dead freshly dead .. blood coming out of their eyes.. seems suspicious to me . What’s really going on and why would they be spraying the woods? I’m sickened.😢 Three Rivers, Mi Update a friend of ours from Marcellus called the DNR because he has the same problem we have both only found dead BUCKS after seeing a crop duster . after him having to get nasty with them someone finally called him back . The DNR officer said it’s the first he has heard of it. He then asked him if he has a deer that has been dead within the last 24 hours and he said no but he knew of someone who has.. which was me , so the DNR called me and I told him what I had seen with the crop duster and then last night finding these dead deer . The DNR officer said he has had a call in Cass County mi also. We told the DNR officer that he could come out and we would drive him out to the deer and he told us that it has been confirmed in St joe county so he was more concerned about the one in Cass county. (So he tells our friend it was the first he has heard of this) which is it ? My question is … if this is the virus then why are we only finding dead Bucks ? No Does or babies? Makes no sense people believe what you want but something does not add up! Another update for you all 8/21/2024 The DNR never came to check this out . No concern whatsoever, I know you all are saying it’s the virus , the DNR still should have came , We drove around d last night by all the fields that are around us this is a thing we have done for years , I finally said this year WOW there are a lot of deer this year , I’m talking in the evenings the deer were everywhere that was 2 weeks ago people … we drove around to these same fields last night maybe a mom and a baby , we seen a dead deer laying in someone’s yard . I’m not saying this can’t be a virus but I am saying someone should have came out and tested the deer on our property.
