"Description
The airspace designated as Oakland OCA/FIR (KZAK) was established in 1984, when a portion of Anchorage FIR, the entire Honolulu FIR and the oceanic portion of Oakland FIR were consolidated. At that time the Oakland Center domestic 9020 computer provided the oceanic flight data processing. Oakland Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) continued publishing airspace information pertinent to the airspace under the designator KZOA wich is actually the designation for the domestic Oakland FIR.
The Oakland Oceanic Flight Information Region (FIR), controls approximately 21.3 million square miles of airspace, so 10% of the Earth surface, and borders the Anchorage FIR to the north, the Tokyo FIR to the west, the Aukland FIR to the south, and the coastline of the contiguous United States on the east.
In contrast, the twenty Air Route Traffic Control Centers (ARTCCs) in the contiguous U.S. encompass roughly 3 million square miles. Oakland Oceanic FIR operates fully under ATOP procedures."
