Wolkige Aussichten

Im Obergeschoss des Laborgebäudes auf der Bergkuppe zeigen das Institut für Atmosphäre und Umwelt der Goethe-Universität und das Max-Planck-Institut für Chemie (Mainz) Messungen von wolkenaktiven Aerosolen – so genannten Wolkenkondensationskernen und Eiskeimen.

Ohne diese natürlichen Staubpartikel in der Luft würde es weder Wolken noch Niederschlag in der Erdatmosphäre geben. Um diese Partikel sichtbar zu machen, wird aus einer Luftprobe eine künstliche Wolke erzeugt, woraufhin sich die entstehenden Tröpfchen bzw. Eisteilchen beobachten und
zählen lassen."

A Cloudy Outlook

Upstairs the laboratory building on the hilltop, the Institute for Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at the Goethe University and the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (Mainz) show measurements of clouds active aerosols - so called cloud condensation nuclei and ice nuclei .

Without this natural dust particles in the air, there would be neither clouds nor rain in the earth's atmosphere. In order to make these particles visible, an artificial cloud is generated from an air sample, whereupon the resulting droplets or ice particles can be observed and counted."
