"Abstract Uncertainty analyses and operational experience at the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory (AFGL) have shown that for single samples of ice hydrometeors, the factor κ = M/(??), where M (spectral liquid water content) and Z (spectral radar reflectivity factor) are computed from aircraft particle size information, is less subject to the uncertainties of converting the physical size of the particles into equivalent melted diameter than are M and Z themselves. Consequently, in correlating multiple-sample aircraft data with simultaneously acquired, independent radar measurements of ZR, there is an appreciable accuracy enhancement that can be attained in the derivation of M vs Z equations by regression means, if κ is used as the correlation parameter, versus ZR, rather than if spectral M is used as the correlation parameter.

"Abstract Equipment developments under the AFCRL radar meteor trail project are reviewed. Winds and densities in the 80–100 km altitude region obtained at AFCRL, Eglin AFB, Stanford, and Durham are briefly compared with results from other radar meteor stations. A comprehensive list of over 40 meteor trail stations is provided.

"(...) Once, one of our 'members', Arnold Barnes (PhD, '62), became engaged. After we congratulated him on his engagement at one of the dinners, he informed us, to our great surprise and amusement, that he decided to state in his engagement notice submitted to the newspapers, that he was a member of The Cherry Pie Society at MIT. He was inspired by all the engagement notices he had seen of the Hasty Pudding Club at Harvard, our neighbor up the river. From then on, we became The Cherry Pie Society. While we were hardly a formal society yet, it was such a logical and fitting name that we kept it and enjoyed it. (...)" http://web.mit.edu/ashdown/www/visitors/history.shtml
